RAMBLINGS concerning octane's stim ability

how octane's abilities work IN GAME::

TACTICLE ABILITY: increase walk speed by 30% and sprint by 40% for 6 seconds. costs 20hp with a cooldown of 1s. stim will never lower hp below 1.

>> in titan fall, the predecesor to apex legends and set in the same universe, we can learn:
- refered to as "adrenaline"
- increases movement speed by 35%
- combat drug invented by Torres Silva, current head of Silva Pharmasuticals

as an aside : octavio's injector apppears to be used akin to an epipen.

thus we can assume the contents of the STIM is similar to epinephran.

dialysis:
  • >. PERITONIAL
    • daily/ongoing dialysis using the stomach lining as a natural filter;
    • a catheder cycles out waste a few times a day with refillable bag of dialysate.
  • >. HEMODIALYSIS
    • a machine removes blood from your body, filters it, then returns it;
    • usually 3 times a week, sessions lasting 3-4 hours.

DIALYSIS is a process that cleans your blood of waste, something your kidneys do for you if they are healthy. on octane's character model we can actually find both types of dialysis.
-> blood flow rate standard in the US ranges from 400-450mL/min. this fast pace causes a list of symptoms: heart pain, fatigue, cramps, hypotension, and at worst blown fistulas and heart attacks.

why would OCTANE need DIALYSIS?


  • a few assumptions:
    • his kidneys are deteriorating under the strain of his drug use
    • its used to filter stim from his blood

roughly 4 500mL of blood in the average human body, typically cycled through between 12-18 times during hemodialysis:

4h * 60min/h = 240min

450mL/min * 240min = 108 000mL or 108L
average flow rate and amount of blood cleaned

if we shorten the time to 6 seconds like his ability:

6s ÷ 60s/min = 0.1min

108 000mL ÷ 0.1min = 1 080 000mL/min
roughly the rate of a firehose

standard machines pull about 300-600 watts, a mere fraction of which account for the mechanical power of contending with veinous pressure, while the rest is used to heat the dialysate liquid.
doing this at an icrease of about 2400x results in much higher power usage:

P = Q * ΔP
equation representing power being the product of flow rate and pressure difference

1 080 000mL/min is 0.018m³/s in standard units and for the sake of eaiser calculation, i am using the standard pressure which is between 200-400mmHg, not the astronomical numbers that would result from forcing blood through tiny tubing.

0.018m³/s * 33 300Pa = 599.4W
"not that much different from a standard machine!" i hear you saying.
but wait. there's more.

the trick is heating up the dialysate liquid to body temperature. which requires this formula:
Q = m * c * ΔT
mass of liquid, heat capacity, and difference in temperature.

i get 18kg/s from our flow rate, 30°F, and blood has a heat capacity of 2 322j/kg*F°
plugging it all in gets us:
1 253 880 Watts
enough to power a small town of roughly 800 homes

what would this do to his body?

-> the dialyser filter essentially becomes a wall against the movement of blood
-> creates massive negative pressure, causing veins to collapse
-> melt any tubing
-> pressure drops can create gas in the blood
-> red blood cells will be shredded from friction, vaporizing
-> access site would be eviscerated
-> cardiac arrest
